While everyone is waiting for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision about his future, many other free agents have to find a new team for the 2025 NFL season. That includes a former Super Bowl champion who played with Tua Tagovailoa and Rodgers until not long ago.
On Tuesday, punter Thomas Morstead revealed on social media that the New York Jets told him heâs being released this offseason: âJust got a call from the Jets that theyâre moving on from me. Just wanted to say thank you to all the fans, all the coaches Iâve worked with the past few years, the teammates, itâs been awesome. Iâve had a great experience.
âDisappointed to be moving on & disappointed how it went down, but itâs just the way it goes in this business. I really appreciate everybody thatâs been a part of the journey. Just wanted to say thank you to everybody,â Morstead added on Instagram.
Thomas Morsteadâs NFL journey so far
At 39, Morsteadâs future in the NFL looks up in the air. The veteran punter entered the league as a fifth-round pick in 2009, celebrating the New Orleans Saintsâ Super Bowl XLIV victory in his rookie year.

He went on to spend more than a decade with the Who Dat Nation before leaving for the Jets in 2021. After finishing that season with the Atlanta Falcons, Morstead punted for Tagovailoaâs Dolphins in 2022.

2023 saw Morstead return to the Jets in the same year Rodgers moved to New York, and he had quite an impressive season, leading the NFL in punts (99) and punting yards (4,831). That campaign earned him a contract extension for 2024, when Morstead recorded 63 punts and 2,972 punting yards.
Changes in New York
But just like he arrived in the same year as Rodgers, Morstead is also leaving New York this offseason. The veteran quarterback has yet to reveal his decision for 2025, though Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly know Rodgers will play for them but has a reason to delay the announcement.
With Morstead on the way out, the Jets announced that theyâre signing rookie punter Kai Kroeger, who went undrafted in April after spending five seasons of college football in South Carolina.
