John Morton has returned to the Detroit Lions, this time as their offensive coordinator. Now, he has sent a blunt message to Jared Goff about what to expect from the offensive changes under his leadership in the 2025 NFL season.
When Dan Campbell was introduced as the Lions’ head coach in 2021, the culture around the franchise began to change. While ultimate success has yet to be achieved, it seems closer than ever and could arrive at any moment.
One of Campbell’s biggest achievements has been building a strong coaching staff. However, he suffered a major blow this offseason when offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, leaving a significant gap in the Lions’ leadership.

On offense, quarterback Jared Goff will now work with a new coordinator after Johnson’s departure. Campbell brought in John Morton, who had a brief stint with Detroit in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant.
Morton already has experience working with Goff, and while some expected a major shift in the quarterback’s game plan, the new offensive coordinator dismissed those concerns.
When asked about the direction of the offense, Morton made it clear that he doesn’t plan to overhaul a system that has been working. He emphasized that the offense will maintain much of the same structure and tone that Ben Johnson established during his time as coordinator.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) walks off the field after the conclusion of an NFL game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Detroit Lions in 2024.
“I mean, I’m not changing much,” Morton said in a Tuesday press conference. “Why? It’s working, right? So that would be the smartest thing to do.”
