Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers have made it abundantly clear that Aaron Rodgers is their priority target for the 2025 NFL season. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking at other candidates for the quarterback position.
On Tuesday, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Steelers will bring Shedeur Sanders for a top-30 visit ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. The visit is expected to take place on Thursday.
This will be the first contact between them since the Senior Bowl. This offseason, the Steelers didn’t meet with Sanders at the NFL combine and neither Tomlin nor general manager Omar Khan attended Shedeur’s Pro Day at Colorado.
Sanders to join list of Steelers’ pre-draft visits amid wait on Rodgers
Sanders visiting Pittsburgh shows that the Steelers continue to explore all possibilities at quarterback with Rodgers still taking his time to make a decision. The team still has an open spot for the 4x NFL MVP, but Rodgers has already been warned that owner Art Rooney’s patience won’t last forever.

The Steelers hold the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and they’ve reportedly been doing their due diligence at the quarterbacks of this year’s class. Before scheduling a visit from Sanders, Tomlin and company reportedly brought Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough in for pre-draft visits as well.

Steelers might face competition for Sanders in 2025 NFL Draft
Sanders is seen as one of the best prospects of 2025, coming off a strong season at the University of Colorado. Last year, he led college football in completed passes (75%), passing yards (4,134), touchdowns (37), yards per game (318), and passer rating (168.2).
Whether Sanders will still be available when the Steelers are on the clock remains to be seen though. The Tennessee Titans are expected to take Cam Ward with the first overall pick, but the Cleveland Browns’ intention with the No. 2 pick is still unclear.
The New York Giants, who select third overall, could also be a possible landing spot for Sanders. And even if all these teams pass on him, the New Orleans Saints could step in with the No. 9 pick. Therefore, the Steelers may need to trade up if they really want Shedeur.

Thursday’s visit then could be very telling for Tomlin and company’s future plans. While Rodgers could still land in Pittsburgh, the Steelers won’t let the wait on the 41-year-old prevent them from finding a long-term solution at QB.
