NFL News: Mike Tomlin’s Steelers confirm why George Pickens was traded to Cowboys after 2025 Draft

George Pickens' unexpected departure from Pittsburgh shocked fans, but now the Steelers are shedding light on the bold move. With eyes still on a championship run, Omar Khan explained why the star wideout was dealt to Dallas, and why the decision had more to do with the future than frustration.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers came to the conclusion that it was time for a fresh start for George Pickens. According to the team’s general manager, Omar Khan, that was the reason for trading the star wide receiver to the Dallas Cowboys, even though it seriously impacts their Super Bowl chances.

ā€œThis trade made sense for everyone. We just kind of talked about it. Lots of serious and honest conversations. We just felt that a fresh start for both sides was the right thing. I wouldn’t use the word disappointment. We had three years with George and, you know, we had some exciting times, but, it was just time for the fresh start for both sides. It was the right thing.ā€

During the press conference to talk about Pickens, Khan didn’t mention anything about Aaron Rodgers, and amid the impression that the Steelers are thinking more about 2026 than the upcoming season, Omar was clear that he wants to compete for a championship now.

Why did George Pickens get traded?

The Steelers confirmed that they traded George Pickens because they trust the depth they have at the wide receiver position. In addition, with a contract extension looming, Khan reiterated that it was time to move on for both sides, although the general manager acknowledged that the player never asked to leave.

ā€œWe wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t feel good about this receiver situation. About our depth here. I know people make the comparison about last year. It’s not even close to being the same. We made the investment with DK (Metcalf). We’ve had another year with some of the young guys. Watch them develop. We have a Robert Woods. Roman’s healthy (Roman Wilson). We have a good group. We feel comfortable.ā€
