Aaron Rodgers remains the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first option as they search for a QB1 for the 2025 NFL season. Mike Tomlin’s team is still waiting for A-Rod’s final decision, but some Plan B options are starting to emerge, including a veteran who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Everything seems to indicate there is a verbal agreement with Rodgers and that the Steelers will have him at the start of next season. However, the reality tells a different story: the former Green Bay Packers player continues to delay giving a final answer, and patience is starting to run thin around Tomlin.
Looking for Plan B candidates who also meet the requirement of being Super Bowl champions (something Rodgers fulfills as well) appears to be crucial for the Steelers. It’s clear that at this stage of the offseason, the idea is to sign an experienced quarterback who can lead the team to finally break the streak of eight seasons without a playoff win.
The Steelers’ Plan B
If Rodgers doesn’t join the Steelers, Plan B could be former Eagles Super Bowl-winning quarterback Carson Wentz. According to Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Wentz-who was Patrick Mahomes’ teammate with the Kansas City Chiefs during last season-is one of the veteran options being considered.

Carson Wentz. former quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs
Wentz is currently a free agent after serving as Mahomes’ backup during the 2024 NFL season in Kansas City. His career highlights include a notable tenure with the Eagles from 2016 to 2020, where he earned a ring for the team’s Super Bowl LII win over the New England Patriots. Wentz was playing at an MVP level that season before suffering a season-ending injury, which changed his career.

Other quarterback options for the Steelers
Time keeps passing, and Rodgers has yet to participate in preseason practices. Although there have been talks between both sides, no agreement has been reached, creating uncertainty for the Steelers. For now, Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and Will Howard remain options within the roster.
