NFL News: Vikings have apparently made starting quarterback decision between Aaron Rodgers and J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings have made their quarterback plans clear, with J.J. McCarthy set to start and signing a new backup. With Aaron Rodgers out of the picture, the team is looking to build a strong foundation for the future.

The Minnesota Vikings seem to have sent another signal that, for now, they are not interested in signing Aaron Rodgers. During the 2025 Draft, the team acquired Sam Howell via trade with the Seahawks, and this was the reaction from head coach Kevin O’Connell in an interview with NFL Network.

“We still think that there’s a lot in Sam’s game to develop but also see where he can take it within our system, within our quarterback development plan here in Minnesota. We feel really good about that quarterback room. All the talent and the things we’ve acquired. Whether it’s up front, the skill guys we do have that we feel so great about, and then just our system going into Year 4, the evolution of that becoming as quarterback friendly as we can make it, while also challenging defenses and trying to do the things that it takes to win football games.”

Although Rodgers publicly denied it, for several weeks many reports have suggested that Aaron is waiting for the Vikings to not be convinced by J.J. McCarthy’s recovery, in hopes of possibly receiving a last-minute call to play for a Super Bowl contender. It doesn’t seem like that will happen.

Who will be Vikings starting quarterback?

J.J. McCarthy will be the starter for the Vikings in a quarterback room that also includes Sam Howell and Brett Rypien. Unless a catastrophe occurs, such as a serious injury, Aaron Rodgers would not be part of the plans.

Howell was drafted by the Washington Commanders in 2022 and, just last year, was traded to the Seahawks. However, with the arrival of Sam Darnold in Seattle, he no longer had a place on the team and was therefore sent to Minnesota.
