NFL proposes a historic suspension for Chiefs star wide receiver Rashee Rice

The NFL is considering a hefty suspension for Rashee Rice after the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days in jail. This all came as a consequence of the car accident he was involved in March of 2024, which left seven people injured.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero, the league proposed a historic punishment. “Rashee Rice is going to be suspended for a portion of the 2025 season. The question now is: How much? My understanding is that the NFL initially proposed a lengthy suspension. Double digit games for Rashee Rice. The Player’s Union and Rice’s attorney and agents argued for a much shorter suspension in part because there is no precedent for suspending someone for over half the season in a case like this.”

Rice is a key player for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl hopes alongside Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Xavier Worthy. Last season, Rashee was also unable to help the team in the final part of the schedule due to a knee injury.

Is Rashee Rice going to be suspended?

Yes. Rashee Rice will be suspended by the NFL, but it is still unknown when the decision will be announced and how many games the suspension will last. Pelissero points out that if the legal process is extended, the Chiefs could potentially lose him for the playoffs.

“There is a September 30 hearing, but there is still a possibility that the sides could come together and agree to a settlement on a suspension that will allow Rice to be suspended at the start of the season. If not, then he would be eligible for at least those first three games. Given the fact that the process could extend to October or November, this is something that could potentially jeopardize Rice’s availability for the postseason.”
