Jordan Love is set to have a new teammate for the 2025 NFL season with the Green Bay Packers, who are reportedly moving ahead by recruiting a player the Buffalo Bills also wanted to evaluate as a potential addition behind Josh Allen.

On Tuesday, TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor reported that the Packers are expected to offer a contract to University of Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma, who was also on the Bills‘ radar.

The Canadian quarterback, a free agent after being overlooked the 2025 NFL Draft, attended the Packers’ rookie minicamp last weekend and was planning to attend the Bills’ minicamp this upcoming weekend as well.

However, it appears that Green Bay will be signing Elgersma before Buffalo gets a chance to evaluate him. It’s an intriguing addition for the Packers in a QB room led by Love, forcing the Bills to look at other options to add depth behind Allen.

A sudden opportunity in the NFL for Elgersma?

The Packers‘ contract offer represents a change of direction in Elgersma’s career. Only a week ago, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected him with the No. 18 pick in the second round of the 2025 Canadian Football League Draft.

Elgersma is coming off a solid 2024 season, which saw him throw for 4,252 yards with 35 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and seven rushing scores in 13 games with the Golden Hawks, leading the program all the way to the Vanier Cup. His school lost to Laval, but the QB still won the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top football player in U Sports.

Still, even if he does sign with the Packers, Elgersma would still have to fight for a place in Green Bay. Malik Willis is projected to continue as Love’s backup, so chances are that Elgersma has to battle it out with Sean Clifford for the No. 3 spot on the QB depth chart.
