Half-time displays are a tradition in American football games at all stages of thesport. Entertainment during the Super Bowl, the annual National Football League (NFL) title game, is a crucial link to pop culture, helping to broaden the TV audience and the national interest.

Prior to the early 1990s, the half-time show was based on a theme and featured university marching bands (Grambling State University Marching Band played at each of the Super Bowl halftime shows, featuring six shows, including at least one every decade from the 1960s through the 1990s), drill teams, and other performance ensembles such as Up with Kids. Starting in 1991, the half-time show started to feature pop music, such as New Kids on the Block and Gloria Estefan.

In an attempt to lift the popularity of the half-time display, Super Bowl XXVII included Michael Jackson’s headlining set. After Super Bowl XXXVIII, whose half-time show included an incident in which Justin Timberlake had revealed a part of Janet Jackson’s chest area, the half-time show began to include classic rock bands before the return of headlining pop musicians in 2011.
