In the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders was expected to be a first-round pick—not a fifth. Now, RGIII has revealed the real reason why every team passed on the quarterback.
Prior to the draft, many scouts ranked Shedeur Sanders as the second-best quarterback available. Nevertheless, he was the sixth signal-caller selected in a surprising turn of events.
The fall shocked many, but Robert Griffin III, a former NFL quarterback, has explained why no team wanted to take a chance on Shedeur Sanders.
Robert Griffin III shares why NFL teams passed on Shedeur Sanders
Shedeur Sanders was widely seen as a top-tier prospect this year. He had an outstanding career with the Colorado Buffaloes and hoped to carry that success into the NFL.
Unfortunately, his draft position has made that path more difficult. As a fifth-round pick, Sanders may not have the opportunity to compete for a starting role in Cleveland, putting his dream of NFL success at risk.

Before the draft, his father, Deion Sanders—his coach at Colorado—spoke highly of his son’s talent and potential, having worked closely with him throughout his college career.
However, that close connection to Deion may have backfired. According to Robert Griffin III, many NFL head coaches reportedly passed on Shedeur out of fear that, if things went wrong, Deion Sanders could be brought in as a replacement—making Coach Prime part of the perceived risk.
“I’m being told some NFL Head Coaches feared drafting Shedeur Sanders in the 1st round as a starter, it’s not working out, and then eventually being replaced by Deion Sanders as Head Coach,” RGIII said. “That’s weak and cowardly. Cost this man $40 million.”
