The most talked-about topic at Cleveland Browns training camp is the quarterback competition. Now, Shedeur Sanders has cleared the air by offering a four-word response when asked whether he’ll start over Joe Flacco in the 2025 NFL season.

Before the 2025 NFL Draft, many analysts expected the Browns to select Shedeur Sanders—just not as late as they did. Cleveland waited until the fifth round to pick him, and even drafted another quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, a round earlier.

Despite that, Sanders is determined to prove the doubters wrong and win the starting job for the upcoming season.

Initially, the Browns signed veteran Joe Flacco in free agency. With Deshaun Watson still recovering from a twice-torn Achilles, Flacco was brought in to provide stability and leadership at the position.

After that, the Browns added three more quarterbacks: Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders—Gabriel and Sanders both through the draft. Of the newcomers, Sanders has drawn the most attention as a potential challenger to Flacco.

Reports suggest that Flacco is currently the front-runner due to his experience. Still, some fans believe Sanders has the talent to compete for the job, though the rookie isn’t making any bold predictions.

On Wednesday, while speaking with a group of kids at Browns training camp, Sanders was asked if he’ll start over Joe Flacco. His response? Four blunt words: “We got preseason first.”

According to reports, the Browns are considering keeping all four quarterbacks on the roster due to the low cost of their contracts. However, for Sanders, simply making the 53-man roster isn’t the end goal. He’s focused on earning the starting job—and proving he belongs on the NFL stage.
