While the NFL is usually giving us blockbuster trades and big free agency moves, the spotlight is now on one of the guys who makes those moves possible. The Pittsburgh Steelers have extended the contract of their general manager, Omar Khan, for three more years. The report, made by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, clarifies that the contract will now go all the way to 2028.
If you get this extension, it means you are making waves in the league. He got Mike Tomlin a new quarterback and a whole lot of new faces for the 2025 season. This is a list of what he’s done for this year:
- Quarterback: Aaron Rodgers
- Wide Receiver: D.K. Metcalf
- Wide Receiver: Robert Woods
- Tight End: Jonnu Smith
- Running Back: Kenneth Gainwell
- Running Back: Trey Sermon
- Cornerback: Jalen Ramsey
- Cornerback: Darius Slay
- Defensive back: Brandin Echols
- Safety: Juan Thornhill
Omar Khan still needs to do one thing this offseason
While Omar Khan has been busy upgrading the roster with new faces, there is one familiar face that has not signed a new contract with the team. That is linebacker T.J. Watt, who is in the middle of a contract dispute with the Steelers. While Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin are adamant on keeping Watt, as long as he doesn’t sign, he won’t suit up and that’s a big concern for the team.

TJ Watt, linebacker of the Pittsburgh Steelers
Watt is entering the last year of his current deal and will turn 31 years old this season. A 7-time Pro Bowler during his 8-year career, Watt is just an elite talent and arguably the best edge rusher in the NFL. He has a Defensive Player of the Year award and also is a 4-time All-Pro. Last season, he led the league in forced fumbles with six, defended four passes as a rusher, racked up 11.5 sacks and had 27 QB hits. He is as good as it gets and is also one of the faces of the team.

Khan’s job is not only to sign, but draft players
This year, the Steelers had an interesting draft. The job for Khan is not only to spend money and trading assets, but also identifying good talent on the draft. This year, Khan and Tomlin agreed to draft the following players:
- First Round: Derrick Harmon, defensive end
- Third Round: Kaleb Johnson, running back
- Fourth Round: Jack Sawyer, linebacker
- Fifth Round: Yahya Black, nose tackle
- Sixth Round: Will Howard, quarterback
- Seventh Round: Carson Bruener, linebacker
- Seventh Round: Donte Kent
The Steelers didn’t have a second-round draft pick this year as they sent it to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the D.K. Metcalf trade. Apparently, all these moves and draft picks have made the owners happy enough to trust Khan for three more years as the team’s general manager.
