Vikings star Justin Jefferson speaks on his impact within the team ahead of the 2025 NFL season

The Minnesota Vikings will head into the new NFL season as contenders — at least within the NFC North. J.J. McCarthy could get his chance to start under center, and with the leadership and experience of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Kevin O’Connell’s squad is aiming to become a serious threat for the title.

Since entering the league in 2020, the former LSU standout has steadily become a key leader for the purple and gold. Through consistent high-level performances and a positive influence on his teammates, he has established himself as a cornerstone of the Vikings organization.

Jefferson is well aware of his role, and in a recent conversation with the media, he shared his thoughts on the impact he has on his teammates — and the approach he believes will lead to big results in the upcoming season.

“I have some type of influence on this team,” Jefferson said, via the Minnesota Star Tribune. “Whenever I have some type of encouraging words or just have that chance to bring up the team and break us down, that all makes a difference. Even just being here makes a difference.”

“Having a little bit of extra time to really bond with the team, build that connection and, of course, getting those reps with the quarterback,” he also added, “it makes a big difference.”

The importance of Jefferson’s presence at OTAs

Having veteran leaders on the roster often helps elevate younger players — and can be a major asset. Kevin O’Connell knows he has that kind of presence in Justin Jefferson, and he’s thankful for the star receiver’s participation in the team’s recent OTAs.

“If this guy, one of the best in the world at what he does, is pushing himself in May and June, I sure as heck better be doing the same thing,” O’Connell said. “… I think it’s been huge. He’s an energy igniter of the whole building. And I think he’s come back with a purpose and a mindset.”

Together, O’Connell and Jefferson will look to lead their team as far as possible — and why not, even dream of reaching the long-awaited Super Bowl.
