Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk is still enjoying the team’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, as the franchise begins to define the future of its core group following the intense Finals win over the Edmonton Oilers in six games.
First, Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aaron Ekblad are the subject of extensive negotiations to renew their contracts. At the same time, Tkachuk must make a decision regarding his physical condition ahead of the upcoming season.
The Panthers’ key figure went through a rollercoaster year after suffering a serious injury during the 4 Nations Face-Off, where he tore his adductor. Despite the setback, he played all 23 playoff games, including scoring the decisive goal in Game 6 of the Final. In this context, the possibility of surgery is becoming increasingly likely.
Will Tkachuk undergo surgery this offseason?
In a press conference following the end of the season, Tkachuk didn’t give a definitive answer about his condition. “It’s probably 50‑50 right now,” he said when asked about the possibility of needing surgery this summer. He then added optimistically, “It’s going to be the best summer yet.”

Tkachuk’s comments suggest that while there is no medical certainty yet, the forward remains focused and positive as he awaits a clear diagnosis. His personal goal is to go into the next campaign healthy and without the physical issues that plagued him this year.

What does this mean for the Panthers’ future?
Tkachuk has already completed more than half of his current deal in Florida, and his contract situation does not pose an immediate concern, as he still has one year left on it. A potential surgery wouldn’t significantly impact the team’s plans, since the star forward would have enough time to recover and return at full strength for the next season.
