Brad Marchand signed a six-year contract extension with the Florida Panthers, and that move could be key in triggering a domino effect across the NHL. As a result, one of the next names on the move could be Nikolaj Ehlers, according to a report by Emily Kaplan.

Several teams are interested in the former Winnipeg Jets star. “As free agency carries on, all eyes on Nikolaj Ehlers. Believe the Canes, Capitals and Lightning are among the teams in on him. He’s doing his due diligence.”

Undoubtedly, Ehlers could be the piece that turns a team into a serious Stanley Cup contender. After playing a massive role in helping the Jets secure the Presidents’ Trophy and the best record in the Western Conference, he has become the most sought-after name at the moment.

Is Nikolaj Ehlers a free agent?

Yes. Nikolaj Ehlers is currently an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of his contract with the Winnipeg Jets on July 1, 2025. As a consequence, many teams want to sign him after the official start of free agency.

As one of the league’s most dynamic and consistent left wings, Ehlers is drawing strong interest from multiple contending teams looking to bolster their top six. However, Elliotte Friedman already warned a decision might not come soon. “This one is going to play out a bit.”
