The Washington Capitals remain in a competitive yet uncertain phase. Despite making the playoffs in recent years, their inability to replicate the deep 2018 Stanley Cup run has raised questions.

At the heart of that 2018 victory—and still central to the team—is Alex Ovechkin. Even as he approaches 40, Ovi continues to produce at a high level, proving his value time and again.

However, as the offseason rolls on, retirement rumors are gaining momentum. Now, a prominent insider has provided a clearer, albeit cautious, update on Ovechkin’s possible next steps.

What’s the latest on Alex Ovechkin’s future in the NHL?

Since being drafted in 2004, Ovechkin has been the face of the Capitals and a generational talent across the league. With 897 goals to his name, he remains the NHL’s all-time leading scorer—and continues to add to that tally with strong seasons like his recent 73-point campaign. Still, his age and expiring contract have stirred speculation. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, there’s no firm prediction on where Ovi will go next.

Speaking on “BR Insider Notebook,” Seravalli stated: “I’d say be careful if you’re putting any predictions on what Ovechkin will do next, I could see him continuing to play; go back and play in Russia; retiring; the world is his oyster; I am not going to be making any predictions.”

While Seravalli leans toward a possible retirement after the 2025–26 season—when Ovechkin becomes a UFA—he acknowledged the winger’s status remains very much fluid.

Could another Stanley Cup Run keep Ovechkin in D.C.?

The Capitals are still seen as a playoff-caliber team, and Ovechkin’s leadership on a younger roster holds significant weight. As one of the last players from their 2018 championship core, his presence extends beyond the stat sheet.

Many believe that if the Capitals manage a strong run—or if Ovi closes in on 1,000 career goals—he could be motivated to extend his NHL journey. While 900 goals is already historic, the allure of an unprecedented four-digit total could be enough to keep him going.
