In recent weeks, Nick Robertson’s future has been the subject of speculation in the NHL, with the Toronto Maple Leafs having Auston Matthews as their top star following Mitch Marner’s departure. In the past few hours, a new contender has emerged aiming to acquire the young forward, who could potentially share a team with superstar Patrick Kane.
Although Robertson recently signed a one-year, $1.825 million contract extension with the Leafs, his future in Toronto remains uncertain. The situation is further complicated by the team’s salary cap restrictions and internal competition for a spot in the starting lineup.
The absence of a high-profile addition to replace Marner makes Robertson a potential option to ease the cap salary and add a significant name to line up alongside Matthews. At this point in the offseason, anything could happen with Robertson.
Will Robertson share a team with Kane?
According to NHL insider Jacob Punturi of Sports Illustrated, the Detroit Red Wings have emerged as a potential destination for Robertson. The team, led by general manager Steve Yzerman, is looking to strengthen its offense to compete in the Atlantic Division.

Nick Robertson #89 of the Toronto Maple Leafs celebrates a goal against the Montreal Canadiens during an NHL pre-season game at Scotiabank Arena on September 28, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Veterans like Kane and James van Riemsdyk anchor their top line, but adding a young and dynamic player like Robertson could provide the offensive depth they need. In this scenario, the Maple Leafs would have room to attempt other acquisitions.
