The NHL season is slowly entering its decisive phase, and every win is crucial, as are the losses. The New York Islanders are still in the playoff hunt, and after defeating the San Jose Sharks, the door remains open. A standout performance by Ilya Sorokin earned him an important statement from HC Patrick Roy about his current form.

The 4-2 victory over the Sharks made it clear that it was not an easy win. Goaltender Sorokin played a crucial role, keeping his team’s net secure with 38 saves. For this reason, HC Roy didn’t hesitate to highlight how important he was after the game.

“They played really well, [I] have to give it to them,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said via NHL.com. “At the same time, we didn’t have the same jump. It was nice to have those key saves. [Sorokin] played a big role in the first period that’s for sure.”

With this victory, the New York Islanders moved ahead of both the Penguins and Flyers in the Metropolitan Division. Although there are still a few games left, the dream of making the playoffs remains intact, and who knows, they could go as far as possible this season in the NHL.

After this important win, the Islanders are dreaming of reaching the playoffs, although, of course, it will not be an easy task as the regular season comes to a close.

Ryan Warsofsky lamented his Sharks’ defeat

While the performance satisfied the San Jose staff, ending the game empty-handed is never a good feeling for teams. Ryan Warsofsky expressed frustration after the loss, although he acknowledged the effort of his players throughout the game.

“I loved our first period,” Sharks coach said. “Sometimes that’s what happens. You don’t score in the first [period] with that type of volume of chances and shots; you usually feel like it’s going to come the other way. I got to give our guys a lot of credit for what they’ve gone through these last couple days.”
