Nikolaj Ehlers appeared in 69 games for the Winnipeg Jets last season, missing some time due to injury, but still managed to score 24 goals—just one fewer than his 25-goal total in the 2022-23 season when he played all 82 games. Now, his career could be taking a significant turn.
According to a recent report from Elliotte Friedman, Ehlers has decided to test the NHL free agency on July 1. While it’s more of a move to gauge interest from other teams, a return to Winnipeg hasn’t been ruled out.
“Hearing Nikolaj Ehlers has informed the Jets he will go to free agency on July 1. Door not closed on Manitoba, but will test the market,” Friedman reported on X. Ehlers began his NHL career with the Jets in 2015.
Ehlers’ Potential Contract Value
It’s worth noting that Nikolaj Ehlers recently played on a lucrative seven-year, $42 million contract with the Jets. This provides a benchmark for what other teams might expect to pay for his services, likely an estimated $6 million annually on a 5-7 year deal.
At 28 years old, and with solid experience from his time with the Jets, it’s probable that he will field a few offers. The main concern, however, is Ehlers’ inconsistent availability over the past three seasons. While he managed to play all 82 games in the 2023-24 season, a feat he hadn’t achieved since 2017-18, his injury history remains a red flag.
Four Years of Multiple Injuries
Any team evaluating Ehlers’ injury history will likely be concerned. Since 2022, he has sustained a total of nine injuries. In 2025 alone, he suffered three injuries, matching his 2022 total and marking his most injury-plagued years.
