Christian Fischer unexpectedly announced his retirement from the NHL at just 28 years old after playing for teams like the Arizona Coyotes, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Fischer became a free agent on July 1st after Columbus decided not to extend his contract following a very brief stint with the team. Given that situation, along with personal factors, he decided to say goodbye.
After 523 games over nine seasons in the NHL, Fischer revealed the reason that motivated him to make a decision that has surprised many on social media, especially at the start of free agency.
Why is Christian Fischer retiring?
According to a report from The Athletic, Christian Fischer is retiring from hockey because he has a significant business opportunity in the golf industry with a friend in Arizona.
This was part of his message confirming the news in an interview with Max Bultman: āI wish there was a big reasoning why, but in the end, Iām very thankful for the career I had, but just personally I think I know itās time for a new chapter in my life.ā
