Sidney Crosby’s future remains one of the most talked-about topics in the NHL, especially after the Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. While there has been speculation about a potential rebuild that could involve the departure of their longtime captain, a recent update addressed that possibility directly.

The veteran forward, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Penguins since being selected first overall in the 2005 Draft, signed a two-year, $17.4 million contract extension in September 2024 (covering the 2025–26 and 2026–27 seasons) after completing the final year of his previous 12-year, $104.4 million deal.

As rumors start to build, the Penguins can rely on their existing agreement with Crosby. Still, given the team’s lackluster results and the magnitude of the star involved, any potential trade talk needs to be publicly dismissed.

Will Crosby remain in Pittsburgh?

According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, Crosby is focused on finishing this chapter of his career alongside longtime teammate Evgeni Malkin. “Crosby has been focused on playing out this run with Evgeni Malkin,” Seravalli said during an appearance quoted by Bleacher Report on July 15. “I don’t see this being an in-season trade.”

This report aligns with another update from insider John Shannon, who also ruled out any possibility of a deal. “I do not see it, period,” was his firm response on Sekeres and Price. Considering the current context and the latest reports, it seems Crosby will be staying in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future.

Crosby is still going strong

The Penguins would lose far more than just a legend if Crosby were to leave. The 37-year-old forward continues to play at an elite level. Last season, he appeared in 80 games, scoring 33 goals and recording 58 assists for 91 points. Remarkably, he averaged at least one point per game for the 20th straight season, surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record.
