The Detroit Red Wings have made a key roster decision, assigning forward Austin Watson, a teammate of Patrick Kane, to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

This move comes as the Red Wings prepare for the upcoming NHL season and reflects the team’s strategy for optimizing its lineup. Watson, a veteran with extensive league experience, has played 523 NHL games with Nashville, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Detroit since the 2012-13 season. His reassignment to the AHL suggests that the Red Wings are restructuring their roster, possibly to make room for new talent or to adjust their tactical approach.

During the 2024-25 season, Watson appeared in eight games with the Red Wings, recording two goals, 17 penalty minutes, seven shots, and 21 hits while averaging 6:10 of ice time. However, his most significant contributions this season have come with the Griffins, where he has been a key player.

Originally selected by the Nashville Predators in the first round (18th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Watson has accumulated 120 points (62 goals, 58 assists) and 722 penalty minutes in his NHL career. He has also played in 45 postseason games, tallying 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) and 48 penalty minutes, including a key role in the Predators’ run to the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.
