The Florida Panthers bounced back from a 0-2 deficit in the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs series with a dominant 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Paul Maurice was clear and confident in his remarks about his team following the victory over the franchise led by star Auston Matthews.
With this win at Scotiabank Arena, the Panthers took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Florida had a wide range of scorers, with six different players finding the back of the net, including Jesper Boqvist and Aaron Ekblad, who each contributed a goal and an assist.
The Maple Leafs faced criticism not only for their performance on the ice but also for their fans’ reaction. During the game, a fan threw Matthews’ jersey onto the ice in a sign of frustration with the team’s star, who has yet to score in the series.
Maurice’s bold admission about the Panthers’ series
“I think it’s the culturally deepest team that we’ve had. The culture is good on the players that are in and out of our lineup. They feel a part of it. Coach has nothing to do with that. Coaching has nothing to do with it,” Maurice admitted in a press conference after the game.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky #72 of the Florida Panthers warms up prior to the game against the Boston Bruins at the Amerant Bank Arena on October 8, 2024 in Sunrise, Florida.
“So getting the first one was important. I thought it flatlined a little bit after that for us. And then probably where the game doesn’t break is Sergei Bobrovsky. Two or three breakaways a night. So I think he was the pivot point in the way that game went,” Maurice also said, praising goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

Bobrovsky’s performance was crucial for the Panthers
Maurice’s words toward Bobrovsky were no coincidence. The goaltender stood out with an impressive performance, making 31 saves, including a crucial stop on a play where William Nylander was close to scoring in the first period, in a moment that could have changed the course of the game.
