Barcelona and Lyon captain Memphis Depay had reportedly agreed a deal in the final days of the summer transfer window. However, it was La Liga who vetoed Depay's move to the Spanish La Liga.

Everyone expected, or at least hoped, that the Dutch would join Barca in the last hours of the transfer window for this summer. According to  Catalan newspaper SPORT, La Liga rules have stopped the transfer.

La Liga president, Javier Tebas, blocked Depay's registration at Barcelona because allegedly, the Catalan club would exceed the club salary limits, which was has agreed as one of the measures in the fight against the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus.

Another key factor

The transfer could have been realized if Ousmane Dembele had agreed to leave Barcelona. Manchester United were believed to be in long talks with the French forward. However, the two clubs couldn't find a final agreement on his transfer.

The deal for Depay was believed to be at around $6m, plus $12 million in bonuses. Now, both forward will remain with their respective clubs, at least until January.
