Lionel Messi is currently in his third season with Inter Miami. He arrived in mid-2023 and played a key role in turning the team into one of Major League Soccer’s most competitive sides, even helping them secure a couple of titles. Now, with his contract nearing expiration, his teammate Jordi Alba shared his thoughts on the matter.
Speaking at a press conference following the announcement of his own contract extension through the end of the 2027 MLS season, Alba was asked if his decision had anything to do with knowing Messi would also stay with the Herons. “The renewal is for me, I’m not renewing for anyone… In the end, I have to focus on myself and not on others,” the left-back clarified.
However, he later admitted he hopes the Argentine superstar decides to sign a new deal. “Obviously I hope Leo stays. I think he’s a vital player for us and obviously for the club as well,” said Jordi.
“For me too, obviously, it would be much better. We’ve known each other for many years and you can see that understanding on the field,” added Alba, who has formed a highly effective partnership with Messi since their days at Barcelona. “I’ve said many times that, with Leo on the team, both I and the other players are better. I think it would be great news if Leo continues.”

Lionel Messi is under contract with Inter Miami until December 2025
What’s the situation with Inter Miami’s other stars?
While Jordi Alba has secured his stay with Inter Miami through December 2027, the other former Barcelona players have yet to make a decision about their futures. Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez are all under contract until the end of 2025 and, if they wish to remain in Florida, will need to negotiate a renewal.

What will happen with Inter Miami’s stars?
In the same press conference, Alba was asked whether he’s spoken with the other stars on the team about their futures. “No, everyone has their own idea. Everyone has their personal situation and will act in the way they believe is right,” said Jordi, referring to Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets. “Obviously for me it would be important if they stayed.”
The left-back noted how age might be a decisive factor in their decisions. “I understand the situation each one is in, and their personal or family ideas, how they feel in soccer. We’re not young anymore,” he said. That comment carries weight, as among the four stars, Alba is the youngest — he turned 36 in March, while Busquets is about to turn 37, and Messi will soon be 38, the same age as Suarez.
“If we’re here, it’s because we feel we can still compete,” Jordi added. “Right now, I feel great and that’s why I renewed. The day that changes, no matter how old I am or what contract I have, I’ll decide to leave and that’ll be it.”
