Mexico defeated Suriname 2-0 and clinched their spot in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup. Cesar Montes scored both goals early in the second half. Now, Javier Aguirre’s team will face Costa Rica in a match that will determine the Group A leader.

During the first half, the match gradually lost intensity. In the opening 30 minutes, Mexico created several chances to break the deadlock—most notably through Edson Alvarez—but lacked the precision needed to convert.

Suriname also had their moments, using the speed of their attacking players to create danger. However, as the half progressed, both teams’ performance dipped, and they went into the break without finding the back of the net.

In the second half, Mexico found the efficiency they had lacked in the first half. Cesar Montes opened the scoring with a header off a corner kick from Alexis Vega. Just minutes later, the defender struck again—this time pouncing on a rebound inside the box and beating the opposing goalkeeper.

With the 2-0 win, Mexico not only secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup, but also overtook Costa Rica in the standings to take over first place in Group A. That could prove decisive, as both teams will face each other in the final group-stage match—and a draw will be enough for Javier Aguirre’s side to advance as group leaders.

This means that if Mexico secure a win, they will clinch a spot in the quarterfinals and eliminate Suriname. A draw would put Javier Aguirre’s team on the verge of qualification, while a Suriname victory would leave both teams tied with 3 points — setting up a dramatic finish on Sunday in Matchday 3.
