After the news that the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina was canceled, the European champions are not resting on their laurels, instead, they are reportedly setting up friendlies.

According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla, Spain will play two home friendlies against Serbia and Egypt. Hence, Luis de la Fuente’s men will stay active. Serbia might be a tough team to face, while Egypt are a bit more manageable. Still, Spain should win both games, especially being at home.

The Spanish national team has won 12 out of its last 15 games, with two ties and one loss that came against Portugal. Since no Finalissima will be played, Spain’s focus will now shift into the World Cup, where they headline Group H against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.

What will Argentina do?

Doble Amarilla also reported that Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, will still call up all the players to travel to Argentina and work on an “XXL camp” in their sporting center in Ezeiza.

Still, Argentina will try to seek help from CONMEBOL to at least sign one friendly. However, the world champions understand it’s a race against time at this moment. It will remain to be seen what happens with them, but news will come eventually.

Finalissima’s history so far

The Finalissima was previously known as the European/South American Nations Cup, or the Artemio Franchi Cup. It happened twice in 1985 and 1993. Then the concept was discontinued until 2022, where CONMEBOL and UEFA signed a memorandum.

Winners of the Finalissima have one name above others, and that’s Argentina. However, they won’t get the chance to get the third one due to the cancelation, even if Argentina wanted to change the date.

  • 1985 – France 2-0 Uruguay – Paris, France
  • 1993 – Argentina 1-1 (5-4 on PK) Denmark – Mar del Plata, Argentina
