The Grand Prix of the Soviet Union was supposed to be held in Moscow during the 1983 season, but the preparations fell through. In 2010, it was formally confirmed that the Russian city of Sochi, which was simultaneously preparing to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, would host a new Formula One event beginning in 2014 as part of a seven-year contract.
