Well, you know what they alwasy sayin sports. You can always get a second chance. And if you don’t take our word for it, just ask Dustin ‘The Diamond‘ Poirier, who made the most of his opportunity to step on the octagon with Conor McGregor again.
Both fighters had already met on the cage back in 2014, with the Irish star knocking Poirier out after just 106 seconds. This time, Dustin had the final laugh by beating him by TKO in the second round of UFC 257.
Poirier neutralized McGregor with a series of leg kicks that clearly affected his rhythm and movement. Then, he connected multiple punches to shock Conor – and the rest of the MMA world – and taking home the victory.
“You know, it’s hard to overcome inactivity over long periods of time. I just wasn’t as comfortable as I needed to be, but Dustin is some fighter. If you put in the time, you’re going to get cozy in here. I have to dust it off and come back, and that’s what I will do. (…) I’ll take my licks, but I’m gutted,” McGregor said.
This was Conor’s first fight since January 2020 and it showed, as Poirer hit the ground running and handed him the first knockout defeat of his career and taking his record to 22-5.“We’re 1-1, so maybe we have to do it again,” Poirier said after the fight.

“I think this is a title fight. I’m the champion,” Poirier said following the bout, and it truly felt like it. Now, whether he’ll ever have a shot at Khabib Nurmagomedov and his flawless record is yet to be seen, as the Russian has shown no signs of coming back from his early retirement.
