Novak Djokovic is making waves at the Miami Open as he chases his 41st Masters 1000 title and the 100th championship of his storied career. A significant part of his recent success can be attributed to his coach, Andy Murray, who joined Djokovic’s team earlier this year. However, tennis icon Tim Henman believes Murray may have rushed into the decision.

Ahead of Djokovic’s quarterfinal victory over Sebastian Korda at the Miami Open, Henman spoke to Tennis Channel and revealed the advice he would have given Murray before he accepted the role as Djokovic’s coach.

Look, I was playing golf with Andy [Murray] at the end of last year, and he was obsessing over that as he obsessed with his tennis. It looked like he was having a great time,” Henman said. “Certainly, my advice would’ve been to take your time. You’ve been on the road so much, you’ve got four beautiful kids and a wife at home—just see what’s out there”.

Despite Henman’s perspective, Murray didn’t wait long before accepting Djokovic’s offer. Henman understands the allure of such an opportunity and acknowledged its impact on the tennis world.

Lo and behold, the next week he takes the job with [Novak] Djokovic, Henman noted. “I think maybe that was too good an opportunity to refuse. For the narrative around our sport, it’s great when we’ve got champions on the court but also past champions involved in the game”.

Henman added that Murray seems content in his new role. “I just had lunch with him half an hour ago, and he’s really enjoying it. Obviously, Novak’s playing really well this week, and it will be interesting to see how that relationship develops. Is it about the next three weeks, three months, or three years? Who knows”.

Henman predicts Djokovic’s 25th Grand Slam at Wimbledon

In a February 2025 interview with Sky Sports, Henman expressed his belief that Wimbledon will be Djokovic’s best chance to secure his 25th Grand Slam title. “I think at Wimbledon, he will have his best chance to win his 25th Grand Slam,” Henman said. “I still remember what happened last summer when he reached the final with very recent surgery and knee problems”.

Henman highlighted Djokovic’s unique mastery of grass courts, adding, “I believe that if he made it that far, it was a combination of the confidence and understanding he feels every time he steps on the grass. Surely, there are many other players who do not feel that stability on this surface”.
