Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have dominated the greatest of all time debate in recent years. However, the discussion often overlooks a key statistic that could serve as an important point in the conversation: the amount of prize money each has earned over the course of their careers.

Although there are still those who make the case for the Spaniard, the debate increasingly seems to come down to the Serbian, who holds the most Grand Slam titles, and the Swiss, who won the most overall titles and was known for his clean, aesthetic playing style that defined an era. We’ll focus here on analyzing the prize money each has earned through competition.

Roger Federer retired in 2022 after playing the Laver Cup. With a total of 103 singles titles, including 20 Grand Slams, he earned a career total of $130.6 million in prize money, according to ATP records, available on the ATP official website.

It’s worth noting that prize money figures also include doubles events, and the total is made up not just of titles won, but of all earnings from participating in ATP tournaments.

Djokovic is the highest-earning tennis player

In that regard, Novak Djokovic—who is still active—has far surpassed Federer’s total. With 99 singles titles and a record 24 Grand Slam titles, the Serbian has earned $186.9 million to date, according to ATP records. Of that amount, $1.35 million has come in the current 2025 season, in which he has yet to win a title.

One important factor to consider is that prize money in tennis has increased over the years. The amount a player could earn in 2001, when Federer won his first title in Milan, is very different from what’s available today.

In fact, Federer —along with Nadal— played a key role in pushing for prize money increases, thanks to both his star power and his influence during two stints on the ATP Player Council.

How much prize money did Rafael Nadal earn?

In terms of prize money alone, Rafael Nadal ranks second all-time. While he has the fewest ATP titles of the three, with 92, he earned more than Federer in both prize money and Grand Slam titles (22), trailing only Djokovic in both categories. According to official records, the Spanish player has earned a total of $134.9 million in prize money.

What about endorsements?

When it comes to also considering endorsements, Federer stands out as the highest-earner among all tennis players. The Swiss star still has deals with brands such as Uniqlo, Rolex and On, which have made him earn more than $1,100 million. Djokovic ($970 Million) and Nadal ($850 Million) are second and third, respectively.
