With Carlos Alcaraz taking center stage, Spanish tennis is enjoying a strong year. But it’s not just Alcaraz making headlines — 26-year-old Malaga native Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is also showing his best form yet in 2025, delivering impressive results across multiple surfaces.

This week, Davidovich Fokina made headlines not only for his performance but also for a public complaint he filed with the ATP about his match schedule, and the sharp criticism he received from fellow player Daniel Evans. On the evening of Thursday, July 30, Davidovich Fokina took to Instagram to express frustration over the timing of his match against Jakub Mensik at the Toronto Masters.

“I want to express my disappointment and anger with the ATP. Tomorrow, all matches start at 12:30 PM except ours, which begins at 11:00 AM. The club is an hour away, which forces us to wake up very early to be ready for the match,” he wrote.

What grabbed attention on Friday was the response from British player Daniel Evans, who is not even competing in the Toronto Masters this year. Evans took to social media with a blunt message: “Get up and play. The world starts its workday at 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, even 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It’s pathetic”.

It was a tough match. I posted on social media that the match time was too early,” he noted on his on-court intervew. “They did it very poorly because the rest of the matches start at 12:30 PM. But I never said I didn’t want to play at 11:00 AM; I just said things needed to change”.

“I’ve played Mensik twice this year and knew it would be tough because he has a strong serve, but I expected to have chances in each game. It was an intense match, even if the score doesn’t fully show it,” he added.

With this win, Davidovich Fokina advances to the Round of 16 at the Toronto Masters 1000, where he will face Andrey Rublev, continuing to build on his impressive 2025 campaign.
