“Today was a very low-level match. I was lucky to win, I didn’t deserve the win, but he just gave me the match. I didn’t do anything well, he just gave me the win,” Bublik began in his interview.



He continued by explaining how little confidence he had during the contest, even revealing that he mentally prepared for defeat before the turning point. “When I saw the draw I already thought, why should I come here? During the match, I already packed my stuff before he made three double faults, because I was 100% sure I was going to lose, but then he gave me the three double faults. There is nothing positive to take away from this match,” said Bublik, clearly unhappy with his level.

“I was not criticizing him, I was just stating the fact that he only made aces, double faults and a shank. I looked like Djokovic because I actually had a rhythm, that is it,” Bublik added, making his stance very clear regarding his earlier remarks.



“Well about the comment on the draw, I just meant what I said about getting him in my draw. He is the only player in the draw I have that bad of a head-to-head against. Except for Daniil, but he was seeded, so I couldn’t play him in the first round. I guess that was what I meant.”

Alexander Zverev has previously pointed out that an increasing number of balls used on the ATP Tour favor certain playing styles, and de Minaur agrees with that view.

“It is tough to explain it, but it is a very dead ball. It does suit the big hitters, the players that have a big revolution on the ball and are able to hit through that.”



Despite his criticism, de Minaur emphasized the importance of adapting rather than complaining. “But again, it is what it is. The ball or the court is not going to change and my job is to adapt and do my best and continue doing that.”



<h2>ATP has to do better</h2>



Arthur Fils was even more direct in his evaluation, stating that the balls fall well below the standards expected at the highest level of professional tennis, something that could impact the course of a game. “They are terrible. Really terrible. The ball is very bad. It is unbelievable.”

Fils called on the ATP to take responsibility and address the issue. “I don’t know who is in charge of it, maybe ATP or whatever, but they have to do better, because it is not normal to play with these balls at our level,” he said.



Alex de Minaur won the match 7-6, 6-2 against Arthur Fils and will be playing the winner of Aleksandar Vukic and Stan Wawrinka, still with the same controversial balls, though.

Mikael Ymer was beaten by his brother Elias Ymer in Stockholm on Tuesday, but after the match, Mikael decided to stay silent when Bolavip asked him about the consistency in doping cases.



The Swede was given an 18-month suspension back in 2023, when he missed out on three whereabouts, which is another term for unannounced doping tests.

During his postgame press conference, Bolavip asked Ymer about the consistency in doping cases after today’s match, but he didn’t want to comment on the case, as he implied he could get suspended again.

The 26-year-old won his biggest title this season when he secured the Masters 1000 title in Madrid, and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/tennis">tennis</a> star calls it a memorable year. However, he is not fully satisfied with the way he has performed in 2025 so far.



But Ruud is still aiming to end a long season with a spot in the ATP Finals, despite currently being nearly 1,000 points away from the number eight spot in the live race to Turin.



Speaking of ending a long season, Ruud pointed out the fact that the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/atp">ATP</a> calendar is still too long, specifically mentioning the Paris Masters as an issue. <h2>A season of highs and lows for Ruud</h2>



As mentioned earlier, Ruud won the biggest title of his career, but on the other hand, the Norwegian failed to win back-to-back matches in the Grand Slams this season. Hence, Ruud is not super satisfied with his 2025 season.

“It has been a mixture of highs and lows,” Ruud tells Bolavip. “This is the first season where I have experienced being out a few weeks in a row with my knee. That was a new challenge, obviously.



“It was a memorable season because of the Madrid title, but I am not sitting here being super satisfied overall. There were too many early losses in tournaments, but I try to learn from those. Like I said, it will be memorable because I won the biggest title in my career this year, and I was playing some really good tennis during that time.”



<h2>All or nothing mentality</h2>



The 26-year-old still has a chance of reaching the ATP Finals, however, it will require some massive results at the end of the season. He says that he is still hoping to qualify for the prestigious event.

“The season is not over yet, and I hope I can finish it strong and maybe climb my way towards having a chance to reach the ATP Finals. But it is going to be really tough, so I am just trying to play well these last three weeks, and then we will see after Paris,” Ruud adds.



“If you are finishing 11 or 15, I mean, what is going to make the difference? Nothing, in my opinion, so it is kind of all or nothing at this point. I am going to try to use that as a motivation and give it a final push.



“There are other players in the same situation. The race is always like this. I will focus on one match at a time and not on points and that stuff, because last year I was thinking too much about points.”



<h2>Ruud understands Djokovic</h2>

Multiple players have recently criticized the number of tournaments and matches, and Ruud, who has played 47 matches this season and dealt with an injury, backs Djokovic.



“Of course, Novak has a point,” Ruud explains. “He has more experience than any other player. Sure, you can pick and choose in a way, because we are not hired by the ATP, we are bosses of our own schedule. What I criticized and talked about at the French Open was that there is an economic motivation to play and not skip any Masters 1000s with the bonus and everything.



“But yeah, sure, if you are in the top 10, top 15, you make a lot of money, but you also spend a lot of money with all the expenses that you have, so you don’t want to miss out on any money if you don’t need to.”

Ruud continues by saying that there is an economic motivation to play, as the players will be punished financially if they don’t play the mandatory events.



“I know that if you are not healthy or not eligible to play, you won’t be put in jail if you don’t play, but there is also an economic incentive to play, and some people care more about it than others. But I think the season is long,” he says.



<h2>Planning changes</h2>



While the schedule has been demanding for Ruud, the Norwegian is taking it as a lesson to prepare things differently next season, hoping to find more consistencty throughout the year.

“To have a mandatory event like Paris that late in the season makes the season really, really long. It’s the same for everyone, but going forward I will plan the schedule a bit differently, maybe skipping a few events here and there.



“I had a very hectic 3–4 years since I reached the top 10. I played a lot of events, and I played some exhibitions in the preseason, so those are some choices that I have made, which I look back on and think I shouldn’t have done. For the future, that is something I will take into consideration.”

Australian tennis has produced legends like Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Pat Cash, Patrick Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt. In recent years, new talents have emerged, but some—like Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic—have attracted more attention for off-court incidents than on-court achievements.



Born in Australia on October 21, 1992, Tomic picked up the sport at an early age under the guidance of his father, John—a hands-on presence who would later spark several controversies. As a junior, Tomic stood out, winning two Grand Slam titles: the 2008 Australian Open and the 2009 U.S. Open.

According to Drysdale, those were the exact words: “Lleyton’s not good enough”. The comment stunned Hewitt and his team. “Lleyton just couldn’t believe it,” Drysdale said. “And the more he thought about it, the angrier he got”. Ironically, years later, Tomic and Hewitt would end up sharing the court—this time as teammates for Australia in the Davis Cup.

<h2>Breakthrough on tour</h2>



Tomic cracked the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/atp">ATP</a> Top 100 and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2011. He won his first ATP title in January 2013, added back-to-back Bogota crowns in 2014 and 2015, and peaked at a career-high No. 17 in 2016.



<h2>Wimbledon sanctioned Tomic twice</h2>



Wimbledon is one of the crown jewels of the tennis calendar—an event every player dreams of competing in. But for Bernard Tomic, two appearances at the All England Club ended in controversy and fines rather than glory.



The first incident came in 2017, when Tomic fell to Mischa Zverev—brother of Alexander—in the opening round. After the match, he admitted in a press conference that he had faked an injury to slow things down, which led tournament officials to hit him with a £13,000 fine. In that same presser, Tomic made headlines with a blunt statement: “I don’t care if I make the fourth round of the U.S. Open or lose in the first round. I’m going to play another ten years, and I know after I retire I won’t have to work again”.



Two years later, in 2019, Tomic faced Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round and lost 6-2, 6-1, 6-4—in just 58 minutes, an unusually short duration for a best-of-three-sets match at the Slams. Wimbledon officials determined that Tomic had violated the tournament’s code of conduct by failing to put forth his best effort. As a result, they withheld his £45,000 prize money.



<h2>Tomic’s Challenger Tour controversies</h2>



After several seasons where he appeared increasingly disconnected from the sport, Tomic’s performance and ranking took a significant hit. No longer in the ATP’s spotlight, the Australian was forced to return to the Challenger Tour—where he once again drew headlines for all the wrong reasons.



In 2024, two incidents stood out. The first came in August at the Santo Domingo Challenger, where Tomic lost in the quarterfinals to Andy Andrade. When Andrade later played Damir Dzumhur in the final, Tomic showed up in the stands and began heckling him, leading to his ejection from the venue.



Just two months later, Tomic reached the final of the Fairfield Challenger against Learner Tien, but suffered a lopsided 6-0, 6-1 defeat in only 39 minutes. The opening set lasted just 16 minutes, making it the shortest final in Challenger history.



<h2>Return to the ATP stage with a new mindset</h2>



After improving his ranking, Tomic earned opportunities to compete in higher-level events again. In 2025, he entered qualifying rounds at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and also played in several ATP tournaments. In June, he secured his first ATP Tour victory in four years.

After skipping the Masters 1000 in Canada, it was announced on Monday that <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/novak-djokovic">Novak Djokovic</a> will also miss the Cincinnati Masters, potentially arriving at the US Open without having played a single match during the American hard-court swing.



The Athletic confirmed the news via a tournament spokesperson. The Cincinnati main draw begins on August 7. This marks the second consecutive year that the Serbian star has chosen to skip the event.

Several stars have raised concerns about the congested schedule, particularly after Wimbledon, when numerous events lead up to the U.S. Open. This has prompted players like <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/tennis/canadian-open-2025-why-did-alcaraz-sinner-and-djokovic-withdraw-from-the-tournament-this-year">Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic to skip the Canadian Open</a>. Now, World No. 3 Alexander Zverev has added his voice to the debate.



The German took aim at the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/atp">ATP</a>’s new Masters 1000 format, which now extends most events to two weeks rather than one. Speaking to Nothing Major, Zverev expressed a preference for the old system, arguing the longer tournaments hurt the overall calendar.



“You have the nine Masters 1000 events, which are mandatory; most of them are two-week-long events now, except Monte-Carlo and Paris Bercy. Which I think are the best two weeks now on the ATP calendar,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alexander-zverev">Zverev</a> said. “I think for a fan and every single tennis player, Paris Bercy was awesome last year. You do not have to stick around or practice in between matches. That is how Masters events used to be and I think all the players loved it”.



Zverev also criticized the new rule introduced in 2025 requiring top-30 players to compete in at least four ATP 500 tournaments each season, up from three. “Now the ATP has made four mandatory 500 events for you to play, which used to be three, now it’s four. So you don’t get under 20 events except if you are pulling out of the big events,” he explained.

The 27-year-old believes the ATP needs to reconsider its scheduling policies, especially with the extended Masters events. “I think this is one subject where the ATP has to really think about it and find a solution about it, and to be honest, I have not heard a single player say that they love the two-week Masters events. I don’t even think the fans like that,” Zverev added.

“They don’t like waiting for two days for their favourite player to play again. I understand tennis is a business, but I am not sure that business plan is working very well right now,” he concluded.



<h2>Carlos Alcaraz previously voiced similar concerns</h2>



During the Barcelona Open, Alcaraz addressed the new Masters 1000 format in a press conference after reaching the tournament’s quarterfinals. The Spaniard made it clear that he prefers the old format, as it allowed players more rest.



“The one-week ones are better. Some will think that in two weeks there are days of rest, but that is not the case,” the four-time Grand Slam champion explained. “You train, you have to mentally prepare for the game, prepare for it… you’re not resting, really. It’s two full weeks. That’s why I prefer the one-week Masters 1000. For me, it’s better for tennis”.

On the evening of Thursday, July 30, Davidovich Fokina took to Instagram to express frustration over the timing of his match against Jakub Mensik at the Toronto Masters.



“I want to express my disappointment and anger with the ATP. Tomorrow, all matches start at 12:30 PM except ours, which begins at 11:00 AM. The club is an hour away, which forces us to wake up very early to be ready for the match,” he wrote.



<h2>Daniel Evans takes a shot at Fokina</h2>



What grabbed attention on Friday was the response from British player Daniel Evans, who is not even competing in the Toronto Masters this year. Evans took to social media with a blunt message: “Get up and play. The world starts its workday at 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, even 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It’s pathetic”.

On Friday, Davidovich Fokina defeated one of the tournament favorites, rising star Jakub Mensik, in straight sets. After the match, he addressed his scheduling complaint.

“I’ve played Mensik twice this year and knew it would be tough because he has a strong serve, but I expected to have chances in each game. It was an intense match, even if the score doesn’t fully show it,” he added.



With this win, Davidovich Fokina advances to the Round of 16 at the Toronto Masters 1000, where he will face Andrey Rublev, continuing to build on his impressive 2025 campaign.

He said how it is “funny” how “we find ways to shorten the schedule to make room for other tournaments, but we can’t find room to shorten the schedule just for there to be nothing. I’d love to see it go back to just two weeks and maybe we can have an extra [week]. I don’t know. But it’s a lot of tennis. There’s a lot of tennis upcoming.”

<h2>Alcaraz, Sinner, Draper all dealing with injuries</h2>



The Canadian Open, which starts on July 27, is the first big event of the summer-hard court swing of the season leading to the US Open. However, this time, the Masters will be without tennis’ current biggest stars, as Alcaraz, Sinner and Draper all are dealing with injuries.



Sinner confirmed he is going to take time to recover from an elbow injury he sustained while playing Wimbledon fourth round against Grigor Dimitrov, after failing in one of the first games in the match. However, he was able to overcome it and won the tournament.

On the other hand, Jack Draper is also dealing with an arm injury, while Alcaraz confirmed on Monday that he is struggling with “small muscle issues” after “many consecutive weeks of competition without rest.”



<h2>Alcaraz has the World No. 1 in sight</h2>



Jannik Sinner has been World No. 1 since June 2024, Carlos Alcaraz has an opportunity to fight for the top spot in the rankings during the American swing. While Sinner has 3,200 points to defend, Alcaraz has only 50 points, which puts him in a good position to climb one spot. However, it will all depend on who has the better run during the upcoming tournaments.
