On Friday, Carlos Alcaraz secured his spot in the French Open final for the second consecutive year after Lorenzo Musetti retired in the fourth set of their semifinal clash. Hours later, Jannik Sinner did the same by defeating Novak Djokovic. That set the stage for the world’s top two players to battle it out for the title on Sunday—something that has happened before.
Since the beginning of their professional careers, Sinner and Alcaraz have met eleven times across various stages on the ATP Tour. In those encounters, the Spanish star holds a clear edge, with seven wins to the Italian’s four.
However, only three of those eleven matches have come in finals. Their first showdown in a title match came at the 2022 Croatia Open, where Sinner claimed the trophy with a 6–7, 6–1, 6–1 win.
Alcaraz had to wait two years for a chance to get revenge in a final against Jannik, and he did so at the 2024 China Open. There, the Spaniard emerged victorious, winning 6–7, 6–4, 7–6. Just a few weeks ago, at the Rome Masters 1000, Carlos once again lifted the trophy after beating the World No. 1 with a 7–6, 6–1 scoreline.

Alcaraz’s clear recent edge
The 7–4 head-to-head advantage for Carlos Alcaraz over Jannik Sinner has taken shape largely due to recent momentum, with the Spaniard winning their last four meetings. That run includes their finals in Beijing and Rome, as well as semifinal victories at the 2024 French Open and Indian Wells.

Following his win over Novak Djokovic, Sinner reflected on his recent defeats to Alcaraz and offered a worrying admission ahead of the Roland Garros final. “Sunday is going to be very difficult. Of course, lately my head-to-head doesn’t look great against Carlos, so let’s see what I can do,” said Jannik.
What did Alcaraz say about Sinner?
Alcaraz also spoke about his upcoming opponent after advancing past Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals. In fact, the Spaniard was highly complimentary of Sinner. “He’s the best tennis player right now. I mean, he’s destroying every opponent,” said Carlos, according to the official ATP Tour website.
Still, the World No. 2 expressed excitement about facing Jannik. “I love that battle,” he said. “But most of the time is just about suffering, because he pushes you to the limit. It gives you feedback of how I can be a better player. I think that’s important, and that’s beautiful. Even if I win or not, it gives you a lot of stats and gives you feedback.”
