With the SEC Championship ahead on the schedule, the Script A may be affected by the recent news that JaMarcus Shephard will be stepping away from the program. In the 2026 campaign, the assistant coach will become the head coach for the Oregon State Beavers.

On that note, DeBoer voiced a straightforward comment.



“Yeah, [Shephard] really wants to be a part of everything that we do throughout,” DeBoer said about the co-offensive coordinator ahead of the SEC Championship Game, via On3. “There’s a couple things here right now early in the week that he’s got to part as far as obligations with kind of getting things started there with his opportunity at Oregon State, which we’re super excited for. He’s a guy that pours everything into this program.”

While a big opportunity awaits for Shephard in Corvallis, the current co-offensive coordinator will remain in Tuscaloosa a while longer. According to The Crimson White, Shephard will stay with the team through the SEC Championship on Saturday.

Now, it’s Alabama who holds the longest active home winning streak in college football with 17 consecutive triumphs at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

<h2>Unsurprising</h2>



Though running back Jam Miller is one of the most exciting players in Alabama, the Crimson Tide has struggled with the rushing game all season long. Through 9 games in the 2025 NCAA campaign, Alabama registers 1,007 rushing yards (average of 111.89 yards per game), which is the third-least among SEC teams.



On the contrary, Simpson and the passing game has thrived all year long. So far, the Crimson Tide registers 2,621 passing yards (291.22 yards per game), which puts the program in third place for the most among the conference. Of course, it’s a double-edged sword, and one that can come back to bite the Tide.



Whether it’s through the air or on the ground, being one-dimensional is far from ideal. With the postseason approaching, Alabama must find a way to get everyone involved on offense. With only three games remaining, DeBoer hopes to spark that change sooner rather than later.

<h2>What a difference a year makes</h2>



Although it’s impossible for fans across the nation to ignore last season’s historic Vanderbilt triumph, time has passed since. Pavia may still be in command of the offense in Nashville, but Jalen Milroe is no longer under center in Tuscaloosa. It’s Simpson’s huddle now, and he is determined to right their wrongs from a year ago.

“They’re not the same team as last year and neither are we. They’re better and we’re better in some ways,” Simpson added. “This is a top-25 matchup with College GameDay coming here. 



“This is a really, really good Vanderbilt team and it could be one of the biggest games of the year. We need to come in with the mentality like we’ve had in the last couple of games with a chip on our shoulder. Like it’s Alabama vs. The World.”

<h2>Chasing history</h2>



Pavia has found his place in the world in Nashville with the Commodores. Vanderbilt has fed off the overlooked quarterback’s mentality and is now convinced it can stand up to any program in college football. The Commodores don’t care <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/most-successful-college-football-programs-ever" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how many national championships</a> their opponent has won. 



Nor, do they worry about how many <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/programs-with-the-most-heisman-trophy-winners" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heisman trophy winners</a> or first overall picks in the Draft attended the school. They will walk into any stadium with a chip on their shoulder, determined to spoil the evening for the home fans.

<h2>Against all odds</h2>



When Vanderbilt walks into Bryant-Denny Stadium, the weight of more than a century of history will be against them. The Crimson Tide has gotten the better of the Commodores time and again, with last season marking the first time in the 21st century that Vanderbilt had the last laugh over Bama. Now, Pavia and company will try to make more history.

Alabama owns the all-time record with 60 wins (two later vacated), four ties, and 20 losses. Moreover, Vanderbilt has won just once in Tuscaloosa—back on September 29, 1984. The Commodores did win more games on the road, but back when Alabama played sporadically in Mobile or Birmingham. More than 40 years later, Pavia will lead the charge, hoping to deliver another big blow to Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama.

Alabama QB Simpson warns Pavia, Vanderbilt ahead of rematch

Alabama’s trip to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs was undeniably seen as a major hurdle. However, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kalen-deboer">Kalen DeBoer</a>’s team made a statement by securing a crucial victory, with Ty Simpson emerging as the clear leader on the field.


 


Unfortunately for the Crimson Tide, not everything was positive this weekend, as news broke of a significant loss for the team. Qua Russaw, the starting linebacker and a key defensive weapon, will have to undergo surgery on one of his feet, and his return to the field remains uncertain.



The news was reported by College Football insider Matt Zenitz, who, through his official X account (formerly Twitter), confirmed this major loss for DeBoer heading into the upcoming stretch of the season.



“One negative for Alabama coming out of its win over Georgia: Starting linebacker Qua Russaw is undergoing surgery today due to a foot injury he suffered last night and is set to miss some time, sources tell @CBSSports,” the insider reported via @mzenitz.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alabama">Alabama Crimson Tide</a>‘s monumental victory over Georgia has been tempered by the significant loss of starting linebacker Qua Russaw, who is reportedly set to miss several games after undergoing surgery for a foot injury suffered during the game.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kirby-smart">Kirby Smart</a> addressed Georgia’s latest loss to Alabama and was asked whether the 1-7 record against the Crimson Tide could start to weigh on his program. The head coach dismissed the concern, saying, “What’s everybody else’s record against them, do you got it? I don’t either. I don’t lose sleep over that because those games have been like championship caliber games.”



Smart stressed that <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/georgia">Georgia</a>’s focus isn’t on the narrative others may create about Alabama. “That’s not going to affect me. I’m just going to be happy and go-lucky if our team comes back and plays well. That’s what I worry about and we’ve got to get better,” he said, insisting next year’s challenges have no connection to this loss.



When asked if there’s added anxiousness when playing <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alabama">Alabama</a>, Smart quickly brushed it aside. “Our record against Alabama has nothing to do with this game. That’s everybody else’s story. What our guys need to worry about are those other three things… win your box, see a little, see a lot. Because those control how you win the game.”



He also pointed out that Georgia’s long streak of success and past meetings with Alabama weren’t the deciding factors. “You’re not going to play perfect, accept that… the examples instill confidence in you. Like, ok, this is how you win the game. You do this, this and this. Which, we didn’t necessarily do.”

<h2>Smart Turns Page After Alabama Defeat</h2>



Smart reflected on the differences from last year’s group, pointing out the youth of this year’s roster. “We’re playing with some young linemen, some young skill guys on defense. We’ve got to continue to grow and get better. The key is will the locker room take the team in the right direction.”



The Georgia coach emphasized that the bigger lesson is about moving forward quickly. “We’ve got a good football team that’s got to get better… We can’t let this game beat us twice. We’ve got to go worry about the next one,” Smart explained.



He also spoke about why he made a point of lifting up his players after the loss. “If things aren’t going well then I want the responsibility for that. That’s always who I’ve been… They’ll take ownership and looking in the mirror, and we can go get better. That’s all we can do.”
