The Carolina Hurricanes headlined one of the biggest drama storylines in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> during the 2024-25 season. Shortly after completing a blockbuster three-team trade for Mikko Rantanen, the Hurricanes learned signing the Finnish star to an extension would be much harder than they initially thought. After Rantanen signed a ludicrous extension in Dallas, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour made a powerful admission.

“When (Rantanen) showed up he said ‘there’s 4 teams I’ll go play for, and you’re not one of them,&apos;” Brind’Amour revealed about his first interactions with Rantanen, via The Adam Gold Show. “There hasn’t been one guy that’s left because they didn’t like it here, except for Mikko [Rantanen]. He didn’t not like it here. There was 28 other teams he wasn’t going to.

<h2>Brind’Amour takes shot at front office</h2>



During the interview, the Hurricanes head coach would go on further on the subject. Brind’Amour would almost be playing with fire as he issued a harsh message, aimed at the organization. 



“The better question is: should we have known that before we signed him, or attempted to sign him?,” Rod Brind’Amour added. “[Jake] Guentzel was a totally opposite thing, if we’d offered him the contract, he’s here, but we didn’t for whatever reason. That’s a different conversation.

“Four down, the third [period] was obviously our best, desperate hockey, but we have to bring that earlier in the game,” Rantanen admitted postgame, via NHL.com. “Probably a little unfortunate in the first two periods, we obviously gave up breakaways, 2-on-1s, that’s not ideal against a good team like this. Most nights they’re going to finish their chances like they did today.”

According to ESPN, the deal also includes Logan Stankoven joining Carolina, along with two first-round picks that will be available for the Canes, who currently sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division with a three-game winning streak.

Rantanen’s short stint with the Canes was cut short by failed contract extension negotiations with the Carolina star. “Obviously, I’ve seen it. I still talk to a lot of guys in Carolina. It’s a tough position for them,” Necas stated, per DNVR Avalanche on X. “They probably should’ve known that Rantanen would sign in Carolina. <h2>Rumors abundle</h2>



Rantanen’s situation in Carolina is arguably the most dramatic storyline heading into the NHL trade deadline. Every hour new reports emerge outdating what was said previously, and it remains unclear where the team stands about their recently acquired superstar.



The Hurricanes “have received interest from the Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers, among others,” as reported by Bleacher Report. However, whether a trade finally occurs is not certain.

Carolina is currently gauging Rantanen’s trade value, before fully investing on an expensive extension. Rantanen, for his part, is not fully committing to the organization prior to March 7’s deadline.

“It’s just a different setup I think. I’m going to the net a little bit more with [Necas],” MacKinnon said about the power play setup with Necas, via NHL.com. “He was such a good half-wall player in Carolina. Obviously, I watched a lot of video on him when he came here, and he was so good on the half wall. So, I don’t want to hog it too much, and I think a little rotation is always pretty good. I think it confuses them a little bit.”

However, the NHL is a business, and friendships often take a backseat to championships in the list of priorities.
