As Pete Nakos of On3 reported, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/garrett-nussmeier" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nussmeier</a> won’t be playing as he is still dealing with an injury. This will be the third week that Nussmeier misses a game after suffering an abdominal strain.



Nussmeier has completed a 67.4% for 1,972 yards and 12 touchdowns to five interceptions. LSU lost four of its last five games with Nussmeier under center, and also scored 25 or less points in each of Nussmeier’s last five games.



<h2>It’s Michael Van Buren Jr. time once again</h2>



Van Buren has played in five games this season, completing 64% of his passes for 647 yards, throwing four touchdowns and one interception in the process. In those five games, he has a 3-2 record.

Starting quarterback John Mateer was forced to undergo surgery, leaving head coach Brent Venables with the urgent task of naming a new QB to lead the Sooners.


 


While there has been no official confirmation yet, all signs point to HC Venables turning to the talented Michael Hawkins Jr. to take over as the Sooners’ starter on October 4, when they host Kent State in Norman.

Mateer, who was playing at a Heisman-caliber level while leading the Sooners to a 4-0 start, sustained the injury—reportedly a broken bone in his right hand—during the first quarter of last Saturday’s victory over Auburn. Head Coach Brent Venables announced that the expectation is for Mateer to return to action sometime this 2025 season, though a precise timeline is still uncertain. 



The recovery is estimated to be about a month, which means he will definitely miss the game against Kent State on October 4 and his availability for the Red River Showdown against Texas on October 11 is in doubt. Following the SEC’s newly announced in-league schedule, Ole Miss will face rivals Mississippi State, LSU, and Oklahoma over the next four <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCAA</a> seasons. However, according to Kiffin, the league’s executives may have taken the word ‘rival’ a bit lightly.



“Yeah, Oklahoma is really disappointing,” Lane Kiffin admitted, via On3. “We don’t have anything in common with them or our fans, so that doesn’t make any sense at all. And so that’s unfortunate with so many great teams that we’ve played for a long time here, especially from our SEC West years. So that’s unfortunate.”

“Playing at this school before, and then having some teammates on the court too, so there was just a lot of emotion to it,” Otega Oweh stated postgame, per On3. “At the end of the day, you kind of have to take that emotion out of it and try and get the win. So that’s what I was really focusing on.“

Oweh did just that, dismantling the Sooners all night long with an incredible performance at Lloyd Noble Center. The Wildcats’ guard scored 28 points and, most importantly, drained the game-winning bucket with six seconds left on the clock.



“I feel like in the first half, I was kind of letting the game come to me and just letting everything play out,” Oweh continued. “But I wanted to be aggressive in the second half and just try to leave my imprint on both defense and offense.”



<h2>Postgame drama</h2>



The nail-biting ending had fans on the edge of their seats, if not standing, and the tension reached its pinnacle as a brawl broke out between the players after the final buzzer.

Last weekend, Jalen Hurts not only became Super Bowl LIX champion but was also named MVP of the game. His remarkable talent began to take shape during his college football days, where he had standout performances with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lincoln-riley">Lincoln Riley</a>, now the head coach of the USC Trojans, had already begun to see the immense potential in him back then.


 


In comments published on SI.com, Riley spoke in a 2022 press conference about the technical skills he had already seen in Hurts during his time in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">NCAAF</a>. The current Super Bowl champion joined the Sooners in his final year of college after transferring from Alabama.



“The question from every team was how do you project this guy,” Riley started. “I told them he’s gonna be a really good player, he’s got a pro mentality.”

“Our time together was short. It was fun. He made me a better coach because his approach was really unique,” Riley also added. “Jalen is a pretty serious, at times stoic guy…We allowed him to be able to relax, enjoy, and play the game maybe a but more free flowing.”

Although Jalen Hurts spent his college years first with the Alabama Crimson Tide and later with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/oklahoma-sooners">Oklahoma Sooners</a>, when it comes to highlighting something that helped his team secure the Super Bowl title, it was none other than the defensive work developed by another program—the Georgia Bulldogs.



Many of Hurts’ current teammates on the Eagles came from there and perfected this aspect in the best possible way, which proved crucial in countering the attacks of Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs.



“I think a big part of it has to do with the Georgia background on defense, you know,” Hurts stated, via On3. “And I think that starts with Nakobe Dean and all those guys that were able to play ball in college together and bring their ways to the league.

However, after the Philadelphia Eagles steamrolled the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl LIX, quarterback Jalen Hurts made an honest admission, crediting one school in the SEC for the team’s success—and it wasn’t either Alabama or Oklahoma, where Hurts attended.

The defense is stacked with players who are accustomed to hoisting silverware, from pee-wee to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>, and they don’t plan on stopping in the NFL. Six players on the Eagles were members of the Bulldogs’ 2021 National Championship squad: Nakobe Dean, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo, and Lewis Cine.
