Devin Williams found himself in trouble again after a rough outing in a game the New York Yankees appeared to have under control against the San Diego Padres. Despite holding a lead and a moment that could’ve shifted further in the home team’s favor — especially after Friars’ star Tatis Jr. was ejected — Williams couldn’t hold it down on the mound.
Social media didn’t hold back, and Williams was heavily criticized on X. One of the reactions read: “This is the 4th game we’ve lost to the hands of Devin Williams this year. It’s no longer just a ‘bad May game.’ It’s a trend that will lose you a playoff spot if it continues,” wrote @Pinstriped_SoM.
The Yankees entered the top of the 8th inning with a 3-0 lead — what looked like a near-certain win — but it unraveled quickly. After Tatis Jr. was tossed, things seemed to tilt in the Padres’ favor. Yet one fan posted: “Yet we’re 3 outs away from yet another loss thanks Devin Williams and thanks Boone.”
Williams’ tough season is no secret
After the loss, frustration poured in from fans who demanded roster changes. “Yankees need to send Devin Williams to the minors,” wrote @HunterEndres following the loss to San Diego. Williams has now allowed 15 runs so far this MLB season.
Mike Scudiero of the “Yapping Yankees” show shared a brutal message of his own: “Any single time Devin Williams takes the mound with ANY lead from here on, I will change the channel/leave the room. I don’t care if they’re up 27-2, I will temporarily leave. Done watching him pitch w/ leads. DONE.”
He hasn’t been the same since leaving the Brewers
Many expected to see the same dominant version of Williams who posted a 1.83 ERA across 241 games with the Brewers from 2019 to 2024. But since joining the Yankees in 2025, he’s struggled. He’s been involved in each of the team’s last five losses and just over a week ago allowed seven runs across two appearances against Tampa Bay and Toronto.
