Jose Caballero ‘dodged a bullet,’ likely available for NY Yankees vs Rangers

The New York Yankees caught a major break with Jose Caballero. The infielder appears to have 'dodged a bullet' after an MRI returned clean following his exit from the team’s series against the Texas Rangers.

One of the primary reasons Anthony Volpe remains in Triple-A is the emergence of Jose Caballero. Caballero’s performance for the New York Yankees has been outstanding, and the club ‘dodged a bullet’ after an injury scare involving elbow swelling following a matchup against the Texas Rangers.

According to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Caballero’s MRI returned clean. The infielder is now expected to be available for Thursday’s series finale against the Rangers.

However, manager Aaron Boone revealed that Caballero is still dealing with lingering swelling. The medical staff will continue to monitor the situation to determine if the inflammation will impact his status for the final game of the set.

Meanwhile, the Volpe saga continues. Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently shared details regarding the decision to keep the young shortstop in Triple-A, despite Volpe being fully healthy and eligible for a major-league return.

What happened to Caballero?

The scare occurred during an at-bat against Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi, when a curveball caught Caballero on the elbow. The impact forced the coaching staff to pull him from the game immediately, sparking concerns over a potential fracture.

Boone admitted the initial swelling was significant, prompting the precautionary MRI. Fortunately for the Yankees, the imaging showed no structural damage, and Caballero is trending toward a return for the series conclusion.

Potential replacements in the lineup

If the Yankees opt to give Caballero an extra day of rest to let the swelling subside, Boone will likely turn to one of three names: Amed Rosario, Max Schuemann, or Blaze Alexander.

While Volpe would be the natural fit to replace Caballero, his current minor-league status means the Yankees must reshuffle their active roster. Any of the three aforementioned players could step in to man the position for the series finale.
