Marcus Semien is off to a difficult start with the New York Mets, but the veteran infielder is not showing signs of concern despite his early struggles at the plate. Acquired in the offseason to strengthen both defense and offensive consistency, Semien has yet to find his rhythm through the first stretch of the 2026 season.

It’s taking some time so far, but definitely no panic in me, Semien said, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, making it clear he remains confident in his ability to adjust.

Through his first seven games, the 35-year-old is hitting just three times in 23 at-bats with a .424 OPS, well below expectations. While he recorded a hit in a recent loss to the San Francisco Giants, his production has been limited, raising early questions about his impact in New York, just as Lindor took responsibility after costly mental error.

Slow start highlights early adjustment period

Semien’s struggles come as the Mets navigate a 3-4 start to the season, with offensive consistency still developing. Despite his track record as a three-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, opposing pitchers have attacked him aggressively early in counts, forcing him into less favorable situations.

Manager Carlos Mendoza remains confident in Semien’s approach, noting that it’s a matter of timing and adjustments rather than deeper concern. The small sample size suggests there is still plenty of time for regression toward his career norms.

Mets counting on veteran turnaround

The Mets acquired Semien in part for his reliability and experience, expecting him to be a steady contributor over the course of a long season. His ability to rebound from early struggles will be key as the team looks to stabilize its lineup.

With a series against the Giants underway, Semien will have opportunities to regain form quickly. If his history is any indication, the veteran infielder could turn this slow start into a short-lived setback rather than a lasting issue.
