As the MLB Trade Deadline nears, the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets have reportedly adopted a “very aggressive” stance, with major roster upgrades in sight. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Wednesday that both clubs could be central players ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
One name rising on both radars: Ryan Helsley, the dominant closer from the St. Louis Cardinals, who could be a difference-maker in a pennant race.
The Mets and Phillies are not alone in the hunt, but their urgency is making headlines — and their targets reflect a push for both short-term impact and postseason aspirations.
Helsley drawing heavy interest
According to The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Will Sammon, the Mets have shown “some interest” in Helsley, particularly as they evaluate options to support a five-man rotation through August. With a packed schedule, bullpen depth has become a top priority.
The Phillies, meanwhile, are on a similar path. As Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported, Philadelphia is focused on landing a “higher-end bullpen addition” before the clock runs out.
Bidding war brewing
Both teams will have to outmaneuver several contenders if they hope to land Helsley. The Mets, led by baseball operations president David Stearns, have also expressed interest in starting pitchers who could “raise the ceiling” of the roster. One name that’s surfaced: Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins.
Alcantara a risky option
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets has already “checked in” on Alcantara, despite his rough 2025 campaign. The former Cy Young winner is posting a 6.66 ERA after returning from Tommy John surgery.

Phillies eyeing bats too
While bullpen upgrades remain a priority, the Phillies are also exploring offensive help. With Alec Bohm sidelined due to a fractured rib, Philadelphia has been linked to Eugenio Suarez, currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
