Michael Kay is best known as the voice of the New York Yankees during broadcasts — a man who knows baseball inside and out and has been connected to the organization for years. But recently, he didn’t hold back in criticizing the Bombers’ struggles and a decision Aaron Boone made with a pitcher.
Boone’s choice to turn to De Los Santos caught plenty of attention, especially from Kay, who knew exactly which pitchers were available at that moment. His remarks only added more fuel to the fire during what has already been a rough stretch for the Yankees.
“I don’t get why they went to De Los Santos,” Kay said of Boone’s decision to use the reliever against the Twins. “Every single pitcher in the bullpen last night was available. Who’s your best? Who’s your best to pitch the 6th inning?”
Yankees’ season slipping away
Kay knows the Yankees are dangerously close to missing the MLB postseason — which would mark the second time in the Boone era and a stunning fall considering the team was playing in the World Series just last season.
“People have to wake up. The season is slipping away,” Kay warned, making it clear Boone was the main target of his criticism and that the Yankees face an uphill battle to secure a playoff spot if their losing ways continue.
Poor position in the AL East
The Yankees sit third in the AL East at 64-57, and winning the division seems highly unlikely — let alone overtaking the Toronto Blue Jays (71-51). But they still have a slim chance to fight for a Wild Card spot if they can turn things around quickly.
