The San Antonio Spurs were mentioned this summer among the teams reportedly interested in acquiring high-profile stars like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo. When asked about these trade rumors, Victor Wembanyama gave an honest and measured response.
In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Wemby was asked whether he believed San Antonio should have pursued negotiations to bring in a superstar in order to raise the team’s competitive ceiling. “No, I don’t think so,” he said confidently.
“Breaking up your entire core for a single player rarely works,” added the French center. “And the Spurs are masters in the art of building teams without having to go out and get too many big players, or having to sacrifice the balance of the group.”
Kevin Durant was one of the names most frequently tied to trade speculation in recent months, as his time with the Phoenix Suns appeared to be nearing an end despite his ongoing contract. While the forward ultimately landed with the Houston Rockets, several other teams — including the Spurs — were rumored as potential destinations.
In Giannis’s case, things remain less certain. Each week brings new speculation about the Greek power forward’s future, as his desire to contend seriously for a championship clashes with the Milwaukee Bucks’ current roster overhaul and overall uncertainty.
Still, Antetokounmpo and the Bucks share a decade-long bond, and that relationship wouldn’t be easy to break. For it to happen, teams like San Antonio would likely have to part with core assets to present Milwaukee with a compelling offer.
When Wembanyama speaks about the “art of building teams,” he’s referring to the patient approach the franchise has taken in recent years — gradually assembling a young core with hopes of developing a top-tier roster capable of competing in the Western Conference over the long term. That method is largely incompatible with the idea of a blockbuster trade for someone like Giannis.
The Spurs now boast the last two Rookie of the Year winners — Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle — and have added 2025 NBA Draft pick No. 2 Dylan Harper. That gives them a core of young, high-upside talent to build around for the next decade.
