Andy Reid will once again take the reins of a team that has been a perennial contender in recent NFL seasons. With the ultimate goal of returning to the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs have made several roster moves that could give Patrick Mahomes the support he needs to get there.
The Chiefs currently have 16 undrafted free agents on their roster following a pivotal Draft just days ago. To make room for potential signings, the franchise had to part ways with several players, who will now be looking for new opportunities as they prepare for the upcoming season.
According to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, B.J. Thompson and Blake Lynch have been released by Reid’s squad to make room for incoming collegiate talent. The situation with Lynch appears straightforward, but Thompson’s case is a bit different — if he clears waivers, he will revert to the Chiefs’ injured reserve list.
“To free up roster spots for undrafted free agents, the Chiefs waived DE B.J. Thompson and released LB Blake Lynch. Per source, if Thompson clears waivers, he will revert back to the Chiefs on injured reserve and will continue his rehab from the seizure he suffered last June,” Derrick reported via @mattderrick.
Thompson arrived in Kansas City during the 2023 NFL Draft after being selected in the fifth round with pick number 166 out of Stephen F. Austin. For his part, Lynch joined last season from the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.
Josh Simmons injury update
Coming from the Ohio State Buckeyes, Josh Simmons has become the most significant bet for the Chiefs heading into the upcoming season. However, a lingering injury from his college football days has raised concerns within the franchise. Despite this, Simmons himself addressed the situation, providing a key injury update to Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs.
“Whatever the trainers will have me doing is what I’ll be doing. I’m really just in the playbook and trying to take mental reps. Obviously what I’m allowed to do, I’m going to do 100 percent. I’ll be getting my toes wet, but, right now, everything’s on rehab,” the OT stated to the press.
A lot is expected from what Simmons can bring to the team for the upcoming season, as one of his primary goals will be to protect the new quarterback. His first-round selection holds great significance, both for the player and for a team that once again has Super Bowl aspirations.
