Jaguars make final decision on Trevor Lawrence weapon ahead of 2025 NFL season

Trevor Lawrence will look to deliver a major strike alongside his Jacksonville Jaguars in the upcoming NFL season — though he knows it won’t be an easy task. Especially now, following the latest news regarding the future of one of his key offensive weapons.

Gabe Davis, who signed a three-year deal with the Jaguars in March 2024, has officially been released and will not return to the franchise for the upcoming season. Late last year, a serious meniscus injury forced him to miss the final games.

The news was reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter, who announced via his X account (formerly Twitter) the Jaguars’ decision to part ways with one of Trevor Lawrence’s offensive contributors from last season.

“Jaguars have released WR Gabe Davis,” the insider reported via @AdamSchefter. The wide receiver had joined the team under then-head coach Doug Pederson, arriving from the Buffalo Bills, where he spent three seasons. Now, he’ll have to look for a new opportunity to continue his NFL career.

During his ten games with the Jaguars, the wide receiver recorded 239 receiving yards, scored two touchdowns, and had one fumble.

A bittersweet stint with the Jaguars

Gabe Davis’ arrival at the start of last season sparked excitement among Jaguars fans, who envisioned a lethal duo alongside Trevor Lawrence on offense. However, those hopes slowly faded as the weeks went by, not only due to the decline in performance but also because of the injuries sustained throughout the competition.

The injury suffered at the end of the season proved to be the tipping point, capping off a lackluster campaign in terms of statistics. This ultimately led the front office to make the decision to cut the player and start considering a new contributor to fill his role heading into the future.

The Jaguars’ offense lost some weight following Davis’ departure, so Lawrence will now need to seek out alternatives to lead his routes starting in Week 1. As of now, the most prominent name in the receiving corps is Brian Thomas Jr., with many placing their hopes on him to form an unstoppable duo alongside the former Clemson Tigers standout.
