Derwin James stood by Justin Herbert through a solid season for the Los Angeles Chargers, which saw them reach the postseason before falling in the Wild Card round. After that loss, Herbert became the target of heavy criticism, but his teammate has now stepped up to defend him against those who don’t truly know him.

Speaking on Micah Parsons’ podcast The Edge, James called for an end to the disrespect toward Herbert. “Can we please stop trying number 10? Stop disrespecting him.” The Chargers quarterback has faced plenty of scrutiny, with many questioning whether he has what it takes to perform in the playoffs.

James didn’t stop there, making a bold promise that Herbert will silence the critics next season. “I promise you. I can’t wait for y’all to see. This next season I know we are going to do what we do for y’all to get to see the real 10.” His postseason struggles—throwing four interceptions against the Texans—fueled the criticism.

It’s worth noting that James has been with Herbert during both times the Chargers have made it to the playoffs since he became the starting quarterback. The first time was in 2022, where they also fell in the Wild Card round, this time to the Jaguars, in a game where Herbert didn’t throw a single interception but lost 30-31.

This isn’t the first time Derwin has defended Herbert

It’s worth mentioning that Derwin James had already defended Herbert after the Chargers were recently eliminated from the playoffs by the Texans, particularly regarding the turnovers that were the main issue. At that time, James said, “Like I said, I don’t want another quarterback, I love him as a player, as a brother, and I know he’s going to work his tail off next season.”

Herbert had solid numbers

The 2024 regular season was incredible for Herbert, with an overall record of 11-6-0, his best with the franchise so far, and a completion rate of 65.9% (332/504), the second time since 2021 that he has achieved such a high percentage. It was a smart season for him, but unfortunately, he lost focus in the playoffs.
