Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots are making internal changes to improve the team heading into the 2025 season, and it was recently revealed that they requested an interview with the Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach for the defensive coordinator position.
According to Mike Reiss, Vrabel’s Patriots have expressed interest in interviewing Ryan Crow for the open defensive coordinator role. It’s worth noting that Crow is no stranger to Vrabel, as they worked together for six years with the Titans.
It’s important to note that Vrabel was a linebacker, so he is likely searching for the best available options to improve the Patriots’ linebacker room. Last season, the Patriots allowed an average of 24.5 points per game, ranking as the 22nd worst defense of the year, giving up a total of 417 points over 17 games.
Regarding Ryan Crow, there isn’t much information available, but he worked with the Miami Dolphins’ linebackers in 2024. Among the top performers of the season were Jordyn Brooks with 143 tackles and Anthony Walker with 68, helping to keep the Dolphins’ defense ranked as the 10th best at the end of the season.
Patriots Struggled with Defensive Gaps After Jerod Mayo’s Departure
Following the departure of Jerod Mayo from the coaching staff, analysis indicates that the Patriots struggled with their defensive line for much of the season. They allowed 2,233 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, as well as 3,596 passing yards and 27 touchdowns—making it one of the team’s most vulnerable areas.
Vrabel’s Strong Defensive Track Record with the Titans
During his time as head coach of the Tennessee Titans, Mike Vrabel was known for having a tough and formidable defense. Between 2018 and 2023, his defense was ranked in the top 10 twice, with 2018 being the highest point at 3rd best and 2021 ranking 6th. Vrabel’s defensive strategy helped the Titans reach the postseason three times, including one appearance in a conference championship game.
