The offseason is always full of surprising stories when it comes to players moving from one NFL franchise to another. In this case, however, the surprise comes in the form of Puka Nacua, a Los Angeles Rams star who made a rare comment about the contract of division rival Brock Purdy, quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.
It’s not common for an active NFL player like Nacua to publicly comment on the contract situation of a player from a rival team — in this case, Purdy of the 49ers. However, during a recent appearance on Julian Edelman’s podcast “Games With Names,” Nacua shared his thoughts on the possible implications of a high-value contract for San Francisco’s star.
These kinds of comments between active players, especially from rival teams, are unusual and can draw attention, as they reflect perceptions about roster management and contract strategies in the NFL.
Nacua’s curious message on Purdy’s contract extension
“I think, no. I think mid-4s. I think he seems like a smart guy. They have a chance to still be in their window. And I think if he goes for a 5 [$50 million-plus], then the window closes. Right?,” Nacua said about the contract Purdy’s possible contract extension.
Nacua’s statement came in response to a question about whether he believed Purdy deserved a new contract averaging 40 million dollars per year. The reality is that the 49ers quarterback’s situation is drawing attention from players across the league, even those from other teams.
Will Purdy get a new contract with the 49ers?
Purdy was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, so his contract hasn’t been particularly high over the past three seasons. The Niners will look to take advantage of the offseason to review their agreements with roster members, in part to improve the contract of their starting quarterback.
