One of the biggest stories to follow this offseason has been Brock Purdyâs new contract. Amid his talks with the San Francisco 49ers, HC Kyle Shanahan has sent him a subtle warning about his future.
During the 2022 NFL Draft, the 49ers were interested in acquiring a new quarterback. However, it wasnât until the last round, with the final pick of the event, that the front office finally made its choice.
Brock Purdy was selected with the last pick of the draft. However, he immediately made a huge impact in the NFL, becoming the teamâs starter that year and surprising many with his talents.

Purdy took the 49ers to the playoffs in his first two years, even making it to the Super Bowl in the 2023 season. His talent is undeniable, and he knows he deserves to be valued by the team accordingly.
The former Iowa State standout is still under his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth $3.7 million. Obviously, these numbers donât reflect his contributions to the team, which is why he is seeking a lucrative extension.
The 49ers are expected to extend his contract this year. Many players opt to skip training until a new deal is finalized, but Kyle Shanahan doesnât expect that from Purdy.

The 49ersâ head coach addressed this matter on Tuesday. While Shanahan believes Purdy wouldnât hold out from training, he sent him a subtle warning by stating that such actions arenât characteristic of the quarterback, applying additional pressure on him.
âI hope not,â Shanahan said on Purdy potentially skipping trainings, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. âAnd I know Brock doesnât want to do that. We donât want him to do that. I mean, no one wants to do that. But these are negotiations that go on between agents and our organization and itâs over a lot of money and stuff. Those arenât just things that you just knock out right away.â
How much will Brock Purdy make in 2025?
It is clear that a $3.7 million contract is far below what a starting QB of the 49ers should be earning. While Purdy has yet to secure a championship, his first two years have been impressive enough to warrant a major payday.
