The Pittsburgh Penguins are approaching the end of a disappointing NHL regular season, which will conclude with a matchup against the Washington Capitals. In what was expected to be a rebuilding year, star Sidney Crosby watched as his team recorded a 33-36-12 record.

The Penguins are in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division and have already been eliminated from playoff contention since early April. Playing the final game against the Caps is an ideal opportunity to try out new players and lineup variations.

Crosby leads the team with 32 goals in his 20th NHL season, in a year where injuries have significantly impacted the Pittsburgh roster. The Penguins aim to close the season with dignity while evaluating options for the future.

Penguins’ roster changes

The Penguins’ latest roster move includes calling up defenseman Filip Král from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The 25-year-old appeared in 59 games this season, scoring 7 goals. He previously played two games with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2022-23 campaign.

In addition to Král’s arrival, the Penguins have decided to reassign forward Joona Koppanen to their AHL affiliate. The 27-year-old has played in 10 games this season, contributing one goal. He has not seen significant ice time.

Penguins’ injuries

It is true that the Penguins’ performance has not been at its best throughout the year. However, injuries have significantly affected Sidney Crosby’s team. Five players, including forwards Rutger McGroarty and Tommy Novak, have been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to various injuries.
